All Hallow's Eve.

Happy Halloween to all! I have lots to share on this bewitching holiday. First, I had to post
"Spirits of the Dead" by Edgar Allan Poe, it's just short and so perfect for today where the veil between the living and the dead is supposedly lifted and the dead return to walk the Earth. Second if you are making any cocktails or drinks today be sure to add a drop or two of black food coloring(see above image). You can also make black ice cubes(the bigger the better) which as they melt make a smoky effect that will eventually turn the whole drink black. Lastly I have some recipes to share at the bottom.

Spirits of the Dead
by
Edgar Allan Poe
(published 1829)

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone --
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy:
Be silent in that solitude
Which is not loneliness -- for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
In life before thee are again
In death around thee -- and their will
Shall then overshadow thee: be still.

For the night -- tho' clear -- shall frown --
And the stars shall look not down,
From their high thrones in the Heaven,
With light like Hope to mortals given --
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever :

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish --
Now are visions ne'er to vanish --
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more -- like dew-drop from the grass:

The breeze -- the breath of God -- is still --
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy -- shadowy -- yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token --
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries! --

This is a great recipe I found on Martha Stewart for turning apples into creepy heads. It has become a Halloween tradition in our house. As for the actual cider, this year I went rogue.

My cider recipe is

2 bottles Martinelli's,
16 oz Jack Daniel and then sprinkle in
4 good shakes of cinnamon,
add a dash of ginger,
a half dash nutmeg and
a pinch of clove.

Add in the heads(apples) and you're all set.
Pour it over black ice for an extra creepy effect.

But it's also amazing hot as well. In fact last night we got into a debate over whether it's better hot or cold. We remain a house divided.

Graveyard Brownies
For these spooky treats I followed another Martha Stewart recipe for Rocky Road brownie bites with a few alterations. I made them in regular size cupcake tins, instead of mini size so I could put Milano cookies in like tombstones. Only let them cool for like five minutes so they are still soft when you put the cookies in. I didn't add any nuts, just mini chocolate chips and marshmallows. I should have written out stuff on the tombstones but I ran out of time.

Happy Halloween!!!!

Perfect Pairing: The Art of the Couples Costume.

It's no secret that I love dressing up and Halloween is my favorite holiday. My husband Daniel has really embraced it as well. He now insists that we do couple costumes every year. I tried to go rogue this year as a witch but alas it was to no avail. So here are some of the things Daniel & I have dressed as over the years.
Bonnie & Clyde
(recently deceased)
Apply bullet holes to chest and neck and apply some undead makeup to take it to the next level.

John & Yoko
Don't forget to make signs that say "Hair Peace" and "Bed Peace".
Indian Prince & Princess
(this was for a friends' wedding in India but the outfits translate well for Halloween)
You can wear a bindi instead of a head piece.
Rajasthan Royalty

American Revolutionary vs. British Redcoat
(this was for an Assassin's Creed event but dressing up as enemy forces can be fun and playful)
A bonus if you fight in the middle of the Halloween party. Don't forget to yell "The red coats are coming!"
American Revolutionary & British Redcoat

Al Capone & a Flapper Floozy
(this was at a Murder Mystery party a couple weeks ago- but Halloween perfection! My character called for a black eye - lipstick works great and lasts all night)
Such fun characters to be dressed up like. Don't forget the cigar!
Pirate Captain & First Mate
(this was my 26th Pirate themed birthday-I love being a pirate, what can I say?)
Don't forget to use some pirate slang. Gimme that there flask of ale!
Pirate Captain & First Mate

Some other great couples costume ideas:
Antony & Cleopatra
Dead Romeo & Juliet
Sonny & Cher
Marilyn Monroe & JFK
Ron Burgundy & Veronica Corningstone
Mick Jagger & Jerry Hall (or Bianca)
Greek Gods (sheets & crowns)
John Smith & Pocahontas
Alice & The White Rabbit
Beetlejuice & Lydia
Mary Poppins and Bert
Popeye & Olive Oil
Richie & Margot Tennenbaum
Suzy & Sam (Moonrise Kingdom)

Have a spooky Monday!

Hey Joe.

It was love at first sight when my eyes befell these amazing, over the knee, vaguely Victorian Jeffrey Campbell for Free People Joe Lace Up Boots. I got them over a month ago but it's finally cool enough to wear them without immediately breaking into a sweat. I can't wait to wear them with leggings and over-sized sweaters, dresses, short skirts and printed tights. They add such a sexy, edginess to any look. Especially with a peek a boo of my bare thigh, it's hard not to feel playful and seductive. I wasn't feeling too great in these photos and just casually threw this look together because I have been dying to post a photo of these bad boys. My forecast is that these will be getting a lot of wear and tear all the way through to spring until it finally gets too hot for me to bear. Stand by for many more posts to come featuring my precious Joes.

When Doves Cry.

I am so feeling like Prince today.  This velvet jacket and peasant top from H&M Fall 2013 collection transform me. A swipe of MAC's retro matte lipstick in Dangerous and some accessories and I feel like I might need to get to some karaoke and belt out some of my Prince faves.
I have been really loving these round two tone sunnies this month. I've been wearing them constantly. I also re-purposed a necklace I never wear by turning it into a boot chain. All it took was a little shortening of the chain. It's so perfect with this look.
My nails are still done from a 1920's Murder Mystery party that I attended over the weekend. It was amazing. And somehow these art deco nails totally work with this look. This ensemble definitely puts a bit more swagger in my step than usual, as you can see in a couple of the photos. I may have gotten carried away....

Pumpkin, Spice & Everything Nice Pancakes.

I have been pumpkin obsessed lately. I bought a few cans and have just been trying to put it into everything I can. I decided pancakes would be a good vehicle for my pumpkin fix. Oh my, am I glad I did. These pancakes are pretty much the best ones I've ever eaten in my life. They are crazy good. And quite filling. They come out darker in color than regular pancakes with cinnamon sprinkled through. They look almost as good as they taste. There's layers of my favorite autumn spices in every bite. Pour on some maple syrup and it's heaven in your mouth.
They're perfect for a lazy Sunday. They pair nicely with cozy socks, a soft flannel and a Netflix binge session.

1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup milk ( I use non-fat)
6 tablespoons pumpkin
1 large egg
2 tablespoons soft butter
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon of clove

1. Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and spices in a bowl.
2. In a separate bowl mix pumpkin, butter and egg.
3. Mix the dry ingredients into the west ingredients.
4. Grease a frying pan and cook 'em up. 1/4 cup of batter needs about 3 minutes per side on medium heat.
I tend to add an extra dash of cinnamon and an extra little pinch of salt. I think it slightly enhances the flavors of the other spices.

Enjoy!

Blackbird.

Feeling like a blackbird today. This capey shirt and all black ensemble makes me feel like I may grow feathers and fly away. If I could I would fly somewhere colder than sunny L.A. I can't take anymore eighty degree weather. I dream of grey skies, a chill in the air and a fall breeze. Wearing all black is really keeping me sane until I can finally sport sweaters, beanies and thick, wooly socks. All black is a regular thing for me, especially during the fall and winter seasons. I don't know why exactly. I always find that I feel like my true self in a colorless look and a bold lip with edgy accessories. Today I was feeling like a minimalist and went light on the jewelry, well, light for me. I figured in case I did grow some wings I wouldn't want a wristful of bangles to weigh me down.
This top I got in Greece in Oia on my honeymoon, it was on the mannequin and I was like yes I will have that please. It's a Greek designer called Moutaki. These skinnies I got in D.C. at a random Barney's outlet that we stumbled across. They're The Cameron by Genetic Denim in Raven. They're pretty much the best motorcycle inspired jean I have come across. They're super stretchy and comfortable with great detailing and cut.  Paired with my Sam Edelman Zoe Booties (they are my faves I have worn these so much I may need another pair) - it's the perfect day to night look for this transitional weather. Especially when I toss in my quilted, silver Rebecca Minkoff bag.
Now I am really ready to grow some wings and fly away...

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night,

Take these broken wings and learn to fly...."

"All your life, you were only waiting
for this moment to arise..."

"Blackbird fly, blackbird fly,
into the light of the dark, black night..."
